We show these options side by side, including the total journey time, the wait between flights and the baggage allowance. This helps you choose between the cheapest fare and the quickest route.

Which Airport Should You Fly Into? Victoria Falls or Livingstone

VFA

Victoria Falls International Airport

Zimbabwe side

LVI

Livingstone airport

Zambian side of the falls

Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) is on the Zimbabwe side and is about 18 km from the town, so it is a short transfer to your hotel. Livingstone airport (LVI) serves the Zambian side of the falls. Both are close to the same waterfall, and the better choice depends on where you plan to stay and what you want to do.

If you are not sure, ask us to compare flights to both airports. Sometimes the fare, the schedule or the route is better into one side.

Best Time to Book Flights to Victoria Falls

July is usually the busiest month for travel to Victoria Falls, and fares can also rise around UK school holidays and the Christmas period. As a general guide, book well ahead, ideally two to three months before you travel, and earlier if you are travelling in July, August or over the holidays.

When to See the Falls at Their Best

The best time to go depends on what you want to see and do, because the Zambezi changes the falls throughout the year.

Water levels are usually highest from about March to May. This is when the falls are at their fullest and most powerful, and you should expect plenty of spray. The Zimbabwe side offers the best view of the main curtain of water in these months.

From August, the water begins to drop. Views become clearer, and white-water rafting is usually at its best, often from around October. On the Zambian side, Devil's Pool, the natural rock pool on the edge of the falls, usually opens from late August until about December, depending on river levels. In the driest months, the Zambian side can run very low, while the Zimbabwean side keeps its water all year.

Dates shift each year, so confirm river conditions with your tour operator before you book flights that cannot be changed.

Visa and Entry Requirements for Victoria Falls

Zimbabwe

British citizens need a visa to visit Zimbabwe. You can apply for an e-visa before you travel or get a visa on arrival, usually for 30 days. At the time of writing, a single-entry visa costs about US$55, but fees can change. Zimbabwe has asked for a passport that is valid for at least six months from your arrival date and has blank pages, so please check the latest GOV.UK advice before you travel.

KAZA Univisa

If you want to see both sides of the falls, the KAZA Univisa may suit you. It covers travel between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and day trips into Botswana. It costs about US$50 and is valid for up to 30 days, but availability can change, so please confirm it before you rely on it.

Zambia

British passport holders do not need a visa to enter Zambia as tourists. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after you arrive and have enough blank pages for entry stamps.

Yellow fever

Zimbabwe asks for a yellow fever certificate if you arrive from a country with a yellow fever risk, including after a transit of more than 12 hours at an airport there. Ethiopia and Kenya are on that list, so check TravelHealthPro if your connection is long. We are happy to guide you through the entry rules when you book.

Plan More Than Your Flight: Safari, Chobe and Beyond

Victoria Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is also a convenient base for some of southern Africa's best wildlife areas. Chobe National Park in Botswana can be visited on a day trip, and Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is also within reach by road.

If you want to see more than one place, ask us whether a multi-city itinerary suits your dates. For example, you may be able to fly into Victoria Falls and return from Johannesburg, Harare or Bulawayo, so you do not have to go back the same way. We can also arrange hotels, so your trip is planned in one place.
