Cheap Flights to Ghana: When to Book?

For other months, booking about six weeks ahead tends to give good prices. November and early months of the year are often cheaper. Midweek departures are usually cheaper than weekends.

Ghana Entry Requirements for British Travellers

Ghana's entry rules are strict, and the visa takes time — start early. Ghanaian-British dual nationals can apply for a dual nationality card from the Interior Ministry in Ghana to show they do not need a visa.

Passport

Valid for at least six months after the day you arrive.

Visa

British citizens must have a visa before travel. Ghana does not issue visas on arrival to UK passport holders. Apply via the Ghana High Commission website, upload documents (including yellow fever certificate), and post printed copies as directed. Standard processing: 10–15 days. Express service at the Premium Application Centre in London: around 3 days.

Yellow fever certificate

Required — upload with your visa application and carry when you travel.

Cash on arrival

Declare all hard currency. You may bring up to the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars; authorities can confiscate the entire amount if you carry more.

Entry rules change — confirm on the GOV.UK Ghana entry requirements page.

Landing in Accra: Airport and Transport Safety

The FCDO currently advises against all but essential travel only to the Bawku Municipality in the Upper East region, and asks visitors to take normal precautions elsewhere. A few points matter on your first day.

  • Airport pick-ups

British nationals have been robbed by impostors who pretended to be their driver at Kotoka International Airport. Ask any driver for identification before you leave with them.

  • Airport theft

A small number of thefts of luggage and travel documents have been reported — keep your passport secure and your bags with you.

  • Taxis

Crime has been reported in all types of taxis, including app-based services and minibuses called tro-tros. Many hotels will book a pick-up for you, which is usually the safest option.

  • After dark

Avoid travelling alone in taxis at night, and avoid road travel outside main towns after dark.

  • Money

Mastercard is not widely accepted — carry a Visa card or back-up cash, and take care at ATMs.
