Here, we compare your options honestly, including the ones that look cheap but cost you a day or more.

Four Ways to Book Flights to Abuja

  1. 1. The overnight nonstop with British Airways. The flight leaves from Heathrow’s Terminal 5 and takes about 6 hours 20 minutes.

  2. 2. Air Peace nonstop flights. Air Peace lists nonstop flights between London and Abuja on selected days, with a journey of between 6 hours 10 minutes and 7 hours. Recent return fares have started at around £613 to £623, which is often below the British Airways price.

  3. 3. One stop through Istanbul, Doha, Addis Ababa or Casablanca. Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and Royal Air Maroc all serve Abuja.

  4. 4. Nonstop to Lagos, then a domestic flight to Abuja. If the nonstop to Abuja is full or expensive, three airlines fly nonstop to Lagos.

What Flights to Abuja Cost from Each UK Airport?

Your departure airport changes the price, and so does the number of stops. These are the lowest return fares we have seen. Average fares are higher than the lowest fares. Manchester averages are noticeably above London averages, which is why we always compare the nonstop from London with a one-stop from your home airport. Fares change daily, so treat the table as a guide.

Is the Cheapest Flight to Abuja Worth It?

Not always. One of the lowest return fares to Abuja, at about £420, uses a connection that takes around 38 hours in total. That is more than six times longer than the nonstop flight. A fare that saves £200 but costs you a day and a half of travel may not be a bargain.

Before you book any cheap fare, check three things: the total journey time, the length of each layover, and whether your bags are checked through to Abuja. We show you all three before you pay.

Always compare total journey time with price — especially on fares under £500 return.

Landing in Abuja Before Dawn: A Practical Plan

The overnight nonstop lands in the early hours, so a little preparation makes the first morning much easier.

  • Distance: Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is about 40 km from the city centre. The drive usually takes 35 to 50 minutes, and longer during rush hours from about 7 am to 9 am and 4:30 pm to 7 pm.

  • Transfer: Pre-book a pick-up through your hotel or host, especially after a night flight. Official airport taxis operate from desks at the terminal, and ride-hailing apps are widely used.

  • Rail: A light rail line serves the airport, but it runs only a few times a day, so most travellers prefer a car.

  • Check-in: Standard hotel check-in is in the afternoon, so ask for early arrival when you book.

  • Cash: You can withdraw naira from ATMs at the airport.

  • SIM: You can buy a local SIM card at the airport.

Safety and Travel Advice for Abuja

Check the latest FCDO advice for Nigeria on GOV.UK before you book, because it changes. At the time of writing, the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the outer suburbs of the Federal Capital Territory, and it notes that violent crime has spread to more central areas of Abuja. It also warns that protests in the capital can turn violent.

The advice points out that kidnap risk affects visitors, including British nationals of Nigerian origin visiting friends and relatives. With that in mind:

  • Arrange your airport pick-up through your hotel, employer or host, and avoid unofficial taxis.
  • Avoid demonstrations and large gatherings.
  • Keep phones, cash and jewellery out of sight when you leave the terminal.
  • Share your travel plans with family, and follow the security advice of your hosts.
  • Check that your travel insurance covers your destination, because some policies exclude areas the FCDO advises against.

Abuja or Lagos: Which Can Be the Best Option?

Fly to Abuja if you are going to the capital or the surrounding Federal Capital Territory. Abuja was planned as a capital in the centre of the country, and it hosts government offices, embassies and international conferences.

Fly to Lagos if your destination is in the south-west, or if you want a wider choice of nonstop flights. You can also fly nonstop to one and continue by air to the other. For the full entry checklist, read our guide to flights to Nigeria, or compare flights to Lagos from the UK.
